I discovered yoga after the birth of my first son in 1996. I practiced Hatha and Iyengar Yoga until 1998, when I went to my first Ashtanga Yoga workshop. It was 'love at first sweat', and since then I has been committed to daily practice.
I was a direct student of the late Ashtanga Yoga guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and continue to study with his grandson, R. Sharath Jois, having made regular trips to Mysore, India, since 2001. I have also studied with Manju Jois (son of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois), Greg and Tracy Cooper (Ashtanga Yoga School of Melbourne), David Williams, Mark Robberds, Matthew Sweeney, Simon Borg-Olivier, Peter Scott, and have frequented the schools of Eileen Hall (Sydney) and Iain Clarke (Brisbane). I began teaching at the Yoga Space in Townsville in 2000, and now teach weekly classes on Magnetic Island. I feel that the strong physical practice of Ashtanga Yoga has the potential to open the heart and calm the mind, enhancing self-awareness and overall wellbeing. Even though it is a dynamic practice, it can be made accessible to many levels of physical ability, so that as many people as possible may benefit from this practice. |

Meredith Starck began practicing yoga 40 years ago. In the mid 1980's she undertook three years of intensive Synergy yoga/dance training in Washington, DC. Her teaching and continued training has evolved into a practice of Scaravelli Yoga through her ongoing work with master teachers Diane Long and Paddy McGrath.
She currently teaches a flowing style of Vinyasa Yoga in natural settings in Townsville and on Magnetic Island. This natural union of inner exploration and expressive movement, is a realm where rhythms and harmony meet. This is the movement of energy and is the focus of our quest for balance and health. A class starts with slow rhythmical circular movement stimulating the energy pathways of the chakra system and progresses into stronger more flowing dance movements. Her abiding passion is for women and girls to honour their bodies through breath and movement. As a mother of two daughters and carer for her own invalid mother, Meredith has personally found yoga as an essential element for leading a holistic life. |

Rocky has practised and taught yoga and meditation for many years, lives a holistic lifestyle and continues to attend yoga training to stay current in his teachings. He completed his teacher training with Radiant Light Yoga on the Sunshine Coast. Together with Janette, he has taken part in kirtan retreats with Deva Premal & Miten, and Jethro & Prem of Sacred Earth, and has taught yoga during Sacred Earth retreats in Australia and overseas. The benefits from yoga come from a regular, consistent practice. His classes are suitable for beginners and those who have practised before, and he encourages commitment and a patient approach. All sessions combine movement with meditation and will help ease stress and anxiety, increase grey matter in your brain (that’s the stuff that helps with memory!) and calm you down if you’ve got a short fuse. No experience is required for these sessions and you'll be welcomed into a great community of blokes. |

Hi ... I am Janine and I am excited to be able to offer Hatha Flow Yoga here on Maggie.
I started out as a Registered Nurse over 30 years ago and very soon recognised that the "band aids" we were putting on people weren’t working long term and that dis-ease was often preventable with good lifestyle choices. I saw time and again that a “Wholistic” approach to health and prevention is better than cure and it has become my passion to help people come back home to themselves, to the mind, body, soul connection – back to the heart becoming their own healers and preventors of dis-ease. My yoga journey began as a student in 1996 after being diagnosed with Endometriosis in my 20s finding a practice that nourished and nurtured me. I trained as a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness instructor in 2007 developing a Lifestyle/Aqua Fitness Business in NZ. Some major life challenges happened, and I moved to Australia in 2011 - Yoga was once again my balance. I was invited to privately train as a Massage Therapist and Yoga/Meditation Teacher on the Sunshine Coast with Jan Bond, Lake Weyba Yoga in 2018 and developed a beautiful varied practice on the Sunshine Coast in school, gym and private studio, both group and one on one... until I packed up and hit the road to travel this beautiful country in my caravan, landing and settling here on Magnetic Island. Having personally journeyed through many of the “big life stressors” ... my biggest realisation has been that all we truly have in this world is ourselves, our breath, this moment. Yoga, breathwork and meditation have been my grounding throughout my journey and I would love to be able to share the gifts I have been given with you. My classes come with a smile, some humour and much love - based in Hatha with gentle flow and movement, with many options for all. I believe in “Wholistic” Yoga for "every-body" so please come and enjoy some you time. Any questions please ask. |
Paddy
Paddy McGrath has over 30 years of dedicated yoga practice and teaching experience. Until recently, she taught workshops and teacher training modules in Thailand , Malaysia , Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Europe.
Initially she trained and certified in Iyengar Yoga (Pune, India), then Astanga Vinyasa (Mysore, India) and then found backbend master 'Yogarcharya Venketesh' (Mysore, India), becoming his first Western student. She later was introduced to ' Scaravelli Yoga', a spinal approach (Diane Long, Italy, and John Stirk, UK). Her absolute passion to find spinal freedom regardless of anyone's current restrictions. This has led her to travel and learn all over Asia. For the past 5 years she has made annual trips to Japan to seek out and learn from Martial Art masters whom she considers masters of understanding gravity. Paddy specialises in helping people with back and joint issues and has training in other modalities such as Emmett technique and Orthopaedic Manual Therapy. Private individual or group sessions are available, including yoga solutions for injuries or movement issues and private sessions for teachers or advanced students. My ever evolving quest is to 'unbutton the spine and make it dance'. |
Alison
Hi I’m Alison a resident of beautiful Magnetic Island. My background is in dance and theatre, having worked in the arts professionally both in
Australia and in Europe for many years. I have recently sold my own dance studio and have “retired” to this wonderful place. I have many years experience in dance teaching ( I am a qualified classical ballet teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance) and I am very aware that maintaining a strong body and clear mind is vital in life. As such I have made an choice to further my knowledge of how the body works by training to be a mat Pilates teacher, with Studio Pilates. The techniques required to maintain strong posture, work safely within our own individual physical limitations and retain good mental and physical health cross many forms of exercise. I sincerely love dance, yoga and Pilates and hope that I can bring a sense of this love to my classes. Pilates is designed for all exercises within a class to be performed at varying levels. What I hope can be gained from them is not only a sense of achievement at the end of each class, but that everyone leaves feeling that they have had FUN! |
