I discovered yoga after the birth of my first son in 1996. I practiced Hatha and Iyengar Yoga until 1998, when I went to my first Ashtanga Yoga workshop. It was 'love at first sweat', and since then I has been committed to daily practice.
I was a direct student of the late Ashtanga Yoga guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and continue to study with his grandson, R. Sharath Jois, having made regular trips to Mysore, India, since 2001. I have also studied with Manju Jois (son of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois), Greg and Tracy Cooper (Ashtanga Yoga School of Melbourne), David Williams, Mark Robberds, Matthew Sweeney, Simon Borg-Olivier, Peter Scott, and have frequented the schools of Eileen Hall (Sydney) and Iain Clarke (Brisbane). I began teaching at the Yoga Space in Townsville in 2000, and now teach weekly classes on Magnetic Island. I feel that the strong physical practice of Ashtanga Yoga has the potential to open the heart and calm the mind, enhancing self-awareness and overall wellbeing. Even though it is a dynamic practice, it can be made accessible to many levels of physical ability, so that as many people as possible may benefit from this practice. |

My yoga journey began primarily with a focus on the physical. Soon after I began noticing positive changes in my mental and emotional states, a more energized body and clearer mind as a direct effect of the practice and I naturally wanted to go deeper and share this gift with others.
I am very grateful to have studied with a number of highly skilled teachers from unique backgrounds including Jivamukti, Vinyassa, Yin and Yoga Therapy of which I incorporate components of each into my teaching. Studying Yoga Therapy has humbled me into the realisation and acknowledgement that no two bodies are the same, the individualistic approach to yoga made so much sense. I am sensitive to the needs of the individual and meet people where they are at in their own life’s journey. By challenging my students to surrender, to become more aware of each moment, each movement, each emotion, each breath I assist in providing techniques and experiences that students can take with them off the mat into every aspect of their lives. I believe that by trusting in your own capabilities and bodies intelligence, through yoga, anything is possible. |

Meredith Starck began practicing yoga 40 years ago. In the mid 1980's she undertook three years of intensive Synergy yoga/dance training in Washington, DC. Her teaching and continued training has evolved into a practice of Scaravelli Yoga through her ongoing work with master teachers Diane Long and Paddy McGrath.
She currently teaches a flowing style of Vinyasa Yoga in natural settings in Townsville and on Magnetic Island. This natural union of inner exploration and expressive movement, is a realm where rhythms and harmony meet. This is the movement of energy and is the focus of our quest for balance and health. A class starts with slow rhythmical circular movement stimulating the energy pathways of the chakra system and progresses into stronger more flowing dance movements. Her abiding passion is for women and girls to honour their bodies through breath and movement. As a mother of two daughters and carer for her own invalid mother, Meredith has personally found yoga as an essential element for leading a holistic life. |

Paddy McGrath has over 30 years of dedicated yoga practice and teaching experience. Until recently, she taught workshops and teacher training modules in Thailand , Malaysia , Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Europe.
Initially she trained and certified in Iyengar Yoga (Pune, India), then Astanga Vinyasa (Mysore, India) and then found backbend master 'Yogarcharya Venketesh' (Mysore, India), becoming his first Western student. She later was introduced to ' Scaravelli Yoga', a spinal approach (Diane Long, Italy, and John Stirk, UK). Her absolute passion to find spinal freedom regardless of anyone's current restrictions. This has led her to travel and learn all over Asia. For the past 5 years she has made annual trips to Japan to seek out and learn from Martial Art masters whom she considers masters of understanding gravity. Paddy is based now on Magnetic island. She is teaching predominantly one on one private sessions or private groups and a few public classes, mainly in the open air and also at Belama House (Meredith Starck 's studio). Paddy specialises in helping people with back and joint issues and has training in other modalities such as Emmett technique and Orthopaedic Manual Theraphy. My ever evolving quest is to ' unbutton the spine and make it dance ' |

Having started my Yoga journey in 1996, I relocated to Cairns the following year where I practised under the tutorage of the then Iyengar senior certificate holder Nicky Knoff. In 2001 in Byron Bay, I enrolled in The 9 month Yoga Arts Teacher Training Course, where I studied and practised Iyengar and Ashtanga Yoga, the training included extensive study in pranyama, yoga philosophy and anatomy.
Upon completion I moved to Townsville and taught at The North Queensland School of Yoga. In 2003 I traveled to India where I deepened my practise in asana and pranayama through teaching and studying. The next 2 years were spent working in a home for destitute children in the village of Tapovan outside Rishikesh. Here I practised Karma and Bhakti Yoga, while teaching asana to the children. During the past 9 years I've spent a total of four years in India increasing my knowledge of yoga and have continuously returned to India to teach and study. In between trips I reside on the beautiful Magnetic Island where I conduct regular classes. |

I have received training with the International Yoga Teachers Association, and am also a qualified Fitness Professional (Certificate IV).
Classes are based on the “hatha yoga” principle, toward balancing energy within the body; and are suitable for beginner to intermediate students. |
